There are a few different touch points when you are working on a computer. The keyboard, the mouse, the chair and the monitor. I could argue for each of them being the most important on any given day, but a new and better monitor is such a relief when you lay eyes on it.

It’s been about a month of working at home now. I have to admit that it’s been a fair expense getting Tammy set up, and the network up to snuff. We’ve also ordered a new printer/scanner to replace the one we bought when we first arrived in Calgary.

I won’t beat around the bush: Dad getting laptops for the kids this past fall has paid off in the biggest way imaginable. There’s been no fighting for “screen time” or scheduling issues for webcams. Ian has even been able to continue his piano lessons via Skype by putting his MacBook Air on the piano. Thank you. 💻

I was already set up, more or less. My biggest issue was the network, and that is worked out now. I did some rearranging and mounted the old Samsung 23″ monitor on the Ergotron arm again, but I was all good to go… at least for a while. But I will not lie: that Samsung monitor was driving me batty. It is older, but it was also a cheaper panel than the larger monitor that Tammy is now using. It was not sharp. I kept moving my head around thinking that I was looking through the wrong part of my progressive lenses at it. I would look at the razor-sharp 15″ retina display on my MacBook and then back to the Samsung and be disappointed in it all over again.

So when Tammy asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, I didn’t hesitate. I wanted one of these. It’s expensive. Almost as expensive at the Thunderbolt Display I bought in 2014. It is the same class of panel as in the 4k iMac, as far as I can tell. Retina resolution, 4k. It would mount on the Ergotron arm and reduce the cable clutter on my desk to almost nothing.

So that was what she ordered and it arrived today. Happy early birthday to me. 🎂

Out of the shipping box
Murphy liked it: it already had a cat door!
All set up. Bonus: 1990 Apple Extended Keyboard 2, one of the finest keyboards ever made.

I think Tammy’s going to put a bow on it later.
