Broken Arm

Sometimes your words come back to haunt you. Only a few days ago, I was praising Ian for “finally learning how to play” this summer. He has been spending lots of time with his friend Joey, just being outside. That has included but not been limited to riding bikes, scooters, slacklining, playing badminton, playing bocce and playing games on iOS together on the deck. Early on, Ian found it exhausting. Yes, play is exhausting when done right. 😊 At the time, I said something to the effect of: yes, you’ll get tired. You’ll get a sunburn. You might skin your knee. You might even break a bone.

And then…

Ian and Joey were riding bikes down by Twelve Mile Coulee school last night. He tried to hop a curb at an angle and missed. He went down and tried to stop his fall with his hand and that was that. A couple of nearby teenage girls were helpful, calling Tammy and staying with Ian and Joey until Tammy could get there with the car. Joey helped put Ian’s bike in the car and then Tammy and Ian were off to Children’s Hospital.

Where was I? I was out in Springbank, leading a BCC group ride. The first I heard of this was a series of buzzes on my wrist from my Apple Watch. I could see that Tammy was texting me, but with my contacts in, I can’t read the tiny text on the screen and had to wait until I could pull my phone out.

Really hard to read this while riding up Escarpment

I called her to get the scoop, but there wasn’t much for me to do, so I finished the ride and then rode home. Tammy and Ian got home not long after I did.

Turns out he has a buckle fracture. It should heal up in 4-6 weeks and be as good as new. In the meantime, he gets to wear a removable cast. He’s a bit sore this morning, but definitely not in agony. He slept on the couch, because he couldn’t climb up into his loft bed.

The funniest part of it was Stephanie’s text back and forth with Tammy:
