Last Night in the Loft Bed

There are some events that come along and make you realize exactly how much time has passed. Miranda graduating high school is an obvious one. At the end of this month, we will have been in Calgary ten years and we will be revisiting our family photo.

But this one’s really “interesting”. Ian has outgrown the loft bed that I built in 2011. At the time, the bed was for Miranda, as Ian was just graduating to a “big boy” bed. Then it became Ian’s when we re-did Miranda’s room in 2017. Ian’s new bed is arriving on Saturday, so tomorrow we will be disassembling the loft bed and moving it to the garage for eventual re-homing via Kijiji.

When I made the bed, the kids were so little that it was practically inconceivable that some day they would outgrow it. Someday has arrived. I can’t complain: the bed’s been in constant use for twelve years, and hopefully someone will want it and that will give it a new life in a new family for another long spell. The thing is so rugged, there’s no worry of it falling apart, that’s for sure. If anyone asks if it’s strong, I’ll just point at Ian and say it was his bed. That kid’s already bigger than most of the riders in the BCC. Still, it is a moment to stop and reflect.

Updated May 13

The bed was just picked up by a young family. They had a young daughter and a toddler boy. Apparently, it’s going to be her bed, and she was really excited when she saw the pictures online. We managed to get it into the bed of a short-bed pickup, with the tailgate down. They had a cargo net. I hope it holds. Would hate for the bed to end up kindling on the highway somewhere.

It’s good to have it out of the garage, and it’s great to know it’s going to a young family. But I will miss it.

I scanned the original plans to give to the new owners. Here they are, for posterity.
