My telescope arrived today! Two big boxes were waiting in the foyer when I got home today.

New telescope
New telescope

I tore the boxes open, and found more boxes. So I opened them. I pulled out the tripod and the telescope itself, along with other bits and pieces. Soon, however, I was sweating. Where are the eyepieces? I kinda expected them to be in the box with the telescope. Turns out they were in the last box I opened. Whew!

It wasn’t that hard to put together. I haven’t put the electric drives in the mount yet, but everything else is together without anything broken. I also aligned the spotting scope and collimated the reflector. The only real problem was trying to figure out the collimation of the primary mirror: the back of the telescope had to come off, and half of the screws were to lock the adjustment, and the other half were for the adjustment itself. Once I figured it out, it was easy.

I would like to imagine I can try it out tonight, but it’s clouding over. Boo hiss.

  4. You like ’em? They’re classics! Twenty-five years old and comfortable as heck. Hope I never have to get rid of them. 🙂

And Stephanie, it’s clear that Dad already has telescope envy. He’s talking about a 10" Dobsonian now… sheesh. 😛

  5. Hey Simon,

If you took your telescope up on a hill could you see exactly what’s happening on board an aircraft carrier like when the US one came?
