2012 Karate Christmas Concert

Tonight was the annual Canada’s Best Karate “Christmas Concert”. This is the third one that we’ve been involved in: the first was 2010 when Miranda was already an advanced orange belt, and the second was last year when I was supposed to be in the show too, but came down sick. This year we had both kids in the show, and it was the first time that one of our kids would be in it as a very young newbie white belt. This added an anticipation, nay, apprehension that wasn’t there previously. When the little white belt beginners get up on stage, anything can happen. 🙂

As it turned out, Ian was fine. Let’s just say he and his cohorts demonstrated how far the kids come by the time they get into the higher classes.

Miranda was in the Masters Class (brown belts) this year, and so had a fairly long demonstration to do, as well as being part of a group of five that did an extra demonstration of tekki sho, one of the more advanced katas. She did great!

The “theme” of this year’s show was Star Wars. In other words, the sempais and other black belts got some light sabers and choreographed duels with lighting and fog. Surprisingly effective. The main set piece which pantomimed a Japanese peasant (Mitsubishi!) and his two kids being visited by the local daimyo (Show Off!) was fun and comedic. The kids got to see most of the show, including this, and there were great peals of laughter.

All in all, a good time.
