GIS Day at the Glenbow Museum

Yesterday was GIS Day, and there was an event being hosted by the Alberta Geomatics Group at the Glenbow Museum. I was encouraged to attend from work. Mark, one of the account managers, mentioned that it was a family-friendly affair with stuff for kids to see and do. So I got a ticket for myself and one for Miranda. Tammy lent Miranda her transit pass, and Miranda took the train downtown, where I met her and we went to the museum.

It was “okay”. I’d say the highlight was getting there early enough that we were allowed to wander around the museum. I hadn’t been there before, so it was new to me. We didn’t really have enough time to look at everything, but I got a taste for what the museum is like.

The event itself had a display of archival maps, some technology demos including drones and a 3-D sand table that reacted to changing contours in real time. There was face painting for the kids, but Miranda didn’t opt into that. 🙂 We stayed for a little while, then walked up Stephen Avenue and took the train back northwest. We stopped at Banff Trail station (near McMahon Stadium) for a dinner at DQ, then continued home.

All in all a nice evening. There seemed to be a lot of dads (the GIS industry is male-heavy) bringing their daughters (hope for the future!).
