The house inspector, Doug, is here and wrapping up the inspection of our house. It was pretty distracting and stressful while he was here. Today is the day that the conditions are supposed to come off the offer on our house.

Tammy and I were up last night combing through 34 different homes that met our criteria. Me being the true GIS geek, decided that I needed to see these things spatially, so made a GIS feature class of house options so I could map them by price, possession window, etc. I have also made a PDF map book that we can take with us and refer to.

Tonight can’t come soon enough.

  1. Argh. Just got off the phone with Tammi. The buyers are "thinking about" changing their offer (take off conditions and lower price) after the inspection. The culprit points: hot water heater is near end of life, and the "new" door to the garage isn’t to code. They want to lower the price by $2000. Total costs to do those changes are about $1000.

So here’s the kicker: unsolicited, one of the realtors representing some of our other potential buyers called Tammi today asking about our house and whether or not the deal had closed. That, combined with the number of showings in the last week and a half meant that Tammi shot back at the buyer’s realtor: "Are your clients *sure* they want to open this up again?"

Now, Tammi is calling that other realtor back. The deal might still close tonight. Or it might be done, and the slate wiped clean. I need a drink.

  2. I knew they’d pull something. *sigh* Maybe we won’t be on our way to house hunt this week.

  3. Al says the market is changing in your favor. Stick your ground and don’t budge. They are just trying to nickle and dime you. Obviously there are other people interested in your house!

  4. Upon further reflection I’ve come to a decision which I’ve run by Simon. Knowing the kind of person that I am, I won’t be bullied. They have been jerking us around from day 1. We have been more than reasonable, but even our good nature has its limits. The only way we’ll acquiesce is if they agree to a closing date that works for us. We agreed to the shorter closing time with the last counter just to get it done. Now they’re continuing to dick around and we’ve (I’ve) had enough!

  5. It’s done.

Three tries at selling and a total of 14 months on the market and it’s done. I was beginning to think that we would never sell this house.

I still think that getting us to cut them a cheque for $200 for a door is cheesy, but as I said to Tammy, when work is footing the bill for the move and have been this patient, I’m not sinking this for a measly $200. Their realtor is giving them $300 as well, just to get them across the finish line. I don’t know about these people. Either they are really tight for cash or just have no sense of how normal people behave.
