Palace of Westminster Finished

Whew.

If I’d really considered how long that would take, I might not have started. But I did, and today I finished it.

Here is the post I made when I’d already drawn the picture on to the canvas, back in mid-August. The picture sat in this state since September 22nd. Maybe I was a little unsure of being able to paint the palace. There were so many small geometric shapes to do, and my hands certainly aren’t steady. But Ian prompted me a week and a half ago and I promised I would finish the painting by Christmas.

It took a two-hour session last weekend, a six-hour session yesterday, and about seven more hours today.

I will point out that one of the highlights of painting this weekend was putting on some of my favourite Star Trek The Next Generation episodes in the background to keep me company. 🙂 I “watched” three episodes yesterday and four today.

  1. Looks great Simon! I’ll bet Ian is pleased. Is your hand cramping? Those were long sessions. Well done.

  2. The "worst part" of it all was cursing my shaky hands as I was trying to paint straight or smooth lines. There’s a reason pastels work better for me than paint: the contact of the stick on the paper is more stable than brush on canvas.

Back when I started, I envisioned the paint to be an "underpainting" and then I would pastel on top of that. But not only am I tired of working on it for now, also having the acrylic paint being the surface allows me to not worry if Ian touches it. He’s a very tactile-oriented kid, and when I was putting him to bed last night he was asking me whether or not it was dry. And when I said it was, he immediately asked if he could touch it. He touched the boat in the corner. Then he asked if he could touch the "bell room" (at the top of the tower), which he immediately did. I thought that was neat.
