Sittin’ in Miranda’s Room

I have no idea why it took this long to think of it, but this morning Tammy suggested I sit at Miranda’s desk to work.

The general plan with the move to Calgary was that I wouldn’t be working from home any more (wouldn’t be much point in the company moving me all this way for me to sit at home all the time). So having a home office wasn’t even part of the house search criteria. However, with travel, training and now flooding, there have been a number of days of me working from home. Up to now, I have been “camping out” in the TV room. But the furniture in there is not meant for eight-hour days with a laptop. After yesterday’s session on the couch & Poang chair, I felt like someone had been hitting my hips with a baseball bat.

Today I started with my office chair in our bedroom, but it was clear that that wasn’t going to work either. It took Tammy to suggest Miranda’s desk. Duh. It’s the only real desk in the house that isn’t in a central location. Of course, I have evicted my daughter from her room, and now she’s playing pathetically in the hallway. She’s been playing outside almost all day every day, so I imagine that will change soon. (The kids are home from school, because they are closed due to the floods.)

  1. Poor Miranda! How did it work out for you? What about setting up a table of some sort in the master bedroom for you? It was nice talking to you all last night. I know you are used to it but it felt a little weird – like we were intruding on your space. It looks like you are all settled in the house. I hope you are happy there.
Dad started the ceiling repairs yesterday, continued today. I’ll let you know when it is completed [washed, sanded, vacuumed, painted{undercoatj+topcoat} – the kitchen plus the dining room wall beside the kitchen.].
Love to you all. Mom & Dad

  2. The desk setup is working out okay for the moment. The desk we have for the computer is in the dining room area, and doesn’t have any space for me to locate my laptop. It may be that a desk in the master bedroom will be the answer.

As for the video call, if it weren’t for Steph’s microphone malfunction, it might have seemed a bit more natural. Next call, we will use the Mac instead of an iPad, which will be a little more "normal" and less prone to jiggling around. We wanted to take you on the tour, so chose the portable option.

It’s funny: video telephones have been predicted for decades and decades, but never took off. There’s a reason for that: the telephone (audio only) IS less intrusive. However, a video call is much richer, and is a good solution when you want more than just a telephone call. You’ll get used to it.

  3. So last night we rectified the desk situation. We went to Pier 1 (our realtor gave us a gift card for $200) and looked around. Our initial goal was a side table for the TV room, but came up empty. But they did have some small desks that would work well as a minor fixture in a room. So we hummed and hawed and then got them to order one in. It will be in next Friday.

    Looking forward to it.
