The project I thought would never end

I am taking today off, because after working eleven-hour days from Monday to Wednesday and a full day Thursday, my project is finally finished. I started working on a project for the New Brunswick Dept of Natural Resources and the Environment in December. My company, INFORM, was subcontracted to do two parts of a larger project. Since I knew Miranda was going to be on the way, I got the new guy involved and working on one part, while I worked on the other.

I got a good start before Miranda showed up, and when I came back to work, I was still feeling confident about meeting the deadline. That’s when the project started to reveal itself… Every time I started working on the “next step”, it would reveal itself to be several steps in one. Sometimes I would do something, and in doing that, realize that I was holding onto misconceptions about what I was doing, and have to backtrack and redo something.

Then I received new data and specifications four days before the deadline. At that point I stopped worrying, and just got down to it. Finally I got it feature-complete Wednesday night, and Thursday was testing and refining it. Now I need to relax a bit.

  1. I know, you’re right. I claim extenuating circumstances: I was triple-booked when the analysis SHOULD have been done, so it was only cursory, and even in retrospect, the project was deceptive in its complexity.

  2. Cool that you were working on a NB project though…what was it and are you scheduled for any trips out here?? DNR Head office is just down the road.

  3. No, the local liasing is being done through the local ESRI Enterprise Solutions Group, so I’m not travelling to NB. Tammy remarked at dinner tonight that it would be funny if the work I was doing was for you and yours.

Start humming "It’s a Small World After All" here. 🙂

  4. Well, I do work for the government, but the wrong department. a while ago The job of GIS manager at DNR came up in an inservice position. I didn’t apply even though it is one pay band above me, I just have it too good at DoT.

So pretty close, It could happen someday. I look forward to the day where we work together again.
