Tintin and Comment Spam

Last night before bed, Miranda and I finished reading Tintin in Tibet together. Her reading has advanced to the point where I read four comic panels, and she reads one and we clip along like that. I gave her the choice of Tibet or The Shooting Star and she chose Tibet. It’s a good one, with a rescue plot and lots of buffoonery by Captain Haddock. It was the first or one of the first Tintin books I read when I was a boy. Or more specifically, Mom read to me when I got them out of the library. Soon I had a collection of my own, which I still have. I now have 20 Tintin books, having added a few in recent years when I saw them at Coles Books.

Also, a technical note for the ii News: I noticed spam comments starting to accumulate in the older posts yesterday. The spam filter that I have had in place has worked very well for years, requiring an actual human and a bit of thinking to be able to fill in the comment form. I have changed the question and answer, and we’ll see how that goes.

Quite frankly, I fail to see the purpose to fill a family blog with hundreds of comments about buying shoes. Admittedly, that’s a bit more family-friendly than the stuff we got before.

  1. but but but….your site is where I come to buy shoes…sigh…guess I’ll have to find another family to follow…

Hey, how’s the bed coming along??

  2. Bed’s just fine. I’m waiting for the paint to dry on the safety rails. Then the whole shebang is done. Look for a photo montage later today! 🙂

Sorry about the shoe thing. We’ll try to keep you as a subscriber with low monthly rates, titillating stories, and monthly cliffhangers.

  3. Well, some more spam showed up. I think the change held them up a bit, but not well enough. I’ve banned the IP addresses that the spam came from, but that won’t fix things for long. I’ll have to put my thinking cap on and come up with a different way to allow people who are not logged in to comment on articles.

I’d hate to stop allowing comments, and forcing everyone to log in is not feasible.
