Umm… Nice Try?

We tried to go skiing today. We were not successful, but on the plus side, we did see some lovely wintry scenery and arrived home alive. Yesterday, a winter storm went through central B.C. and the foothills. We were expecting some of that snow in Calgary, but when we got up this morning, it was -2 and no new snow. In fact, it rained yesterday at +2.

We were worried about the highway conditions into the mountains, but decided to give it a try. I was concerned that the road would be dangerous. As it turned out, the roads weren’t bad. But…

  • As we drove towards the mountains, the temperature went up. It was +1 at the mountain. It was also raining hard at times, although not so much at the hill itself.
  • The parking lots at the hill were a zoo. They had about a half-metre of snow and had only plowed a minimal amount. It was all backed up with cars that didn’t know where to park and were getting stuck doing so.

I tried the south lot, then the north lots, and it was the same wherever we went. I didn’t want to get stuck or double-parked or worse, so we beat a retreat back to Calgary.

The good news was that the snowplow preceded us down the highway for most of it.

And Tammy had been warning me to look out for mountain goats the whole morning. We did see some, but they were well off the road.

Current thinking is that since we’ll have “Christmas Dinner” on the 24th, we might give it a go on Christmas Day. They should have plowed the parking lot by then.
