Wait… you mean I can do something other than cry?

In the last couple of days, a realization has been coming over Miranda: you can use your voice for something other than crying! Friday, I was holding her, and she was happy and she made sort of a “hunh” sound. It took a moment to click that that was the first time she’d made a vocalization that wasn’t fussing or crying.

Then last night Tammy and I had a (quiet) chuckle, because I swear she was singing! We had put her to bed after a feeding and a walk, but we weren’t hopeful that she would sleep, because her eyes were open. So after a minute or two, we could hear her start to move her legs and arms about and breathing erratically like when she’s moving into “fussy mode”. Just when we thought she would start her first fussy whine, she started making a high-pitched sound that sounded just like a young child singing to themselves. 😀 It lasted for about 30 seconds, then she went quiet again and eventually fell asleep.

Whether or not she was actually singing in a musical sense or just experimenting with her vocal chords isn’t really important, it was just neat.

  1. So did you run in after a while and try to see if she was still breathing. Marney and I did that countless times anything out of the ordinary happened (i.e. sleep more than 1 hours in a row!)

  2. Yes, I do that quite frequently because she’s a really snorty, wheezy, spit-uppy baby. I check to make sure she isn’t choking or gagging.

As for sleep, we’ve been quite lucky. She tends to sleep 5-7 hours at night if she gets fed around 10-11 pm and isn’t too gassy.

  3. Well I hope the sleep thing goes better for you than it did for us. I used to have to do weird walking and bounce Georgia up and down to get her to stop crying. It took months of training to get her to go to bed quitely.
