WALL-E
WALL-E

Tammy and I don’t get out much these days. Understandable, of course. But when we do, it’s nice when it’s memorable. Tonight, we cashed in on a Christmas present from last year from Sveta and Gena: “One evening of looking after Miranda and Ian”. We decided a while ago that we would go and see the new Pixar film WALL-E. Throw in a dinner, and that sounded pretty good. We tried to do it Wednesday, but Miranda came home early from Pender Island (it was just allergies, but Colin and Carol were worried that Miranda wasn’t well) and we thought it unwise to go through with it. So we rescheduled for tonight. We dropped the kids off at 3, and then headed into town. A couple of stops later, we were at the theatre to catch the early show at 4:55. We figured it was a tradeoff: more kids at that time, but WALL-E is tops at the box office and it ensured us a seat. It’s a good thing we did: when we came out of the movie, there were lineups out the door. After the movie, we hit the Royal Roads Cafe for dinner, and ended up back at Sveta and Gena’s by a little after eight. We’d said we’d be back between 9 and 10, but everything was done. At least this way we’d catch the kids before they’d dozed off, avoiding having to wake them up to take them home. Sveta was put out that we were taking them away early (as usual…) but not too bad. Miranda had spent the evening playing with Gena’s grandson Ilya, who is visiting from Russia.

How was the movie? It was great.

There were lots of times when we laughed out loud, there were lots of thoughtful bits, there were bits that made you go “Awww”, and there there bits that made you go “Oooooh!” I’m having trouble coming up with something that would sum it up simply without just rehashing the story. It was a great movie, with lots of things to think about if you want to. And lots to look at if you want to. The tie-in to “Hello, Dolly!” was priceless. Thanks to growing up with my parents, I recognized the music immediately and started laughing right away.

I’ll be getting this one as soon as it’s out on DVD. I’d like to watch it again right now!

  1. It was a good movie. I went in with no expectations and little information. I just knew it was about a robot. I’d only ever seen 1/2 a trailer for it prior to going. I’m surprised that Simon didn’t make a crack about me saying: "What about his cockroach?" (You’ll understand when you see it.) 😀

  2. I think that the movie was made all the better by the sheer crap that befouled the trailers before it. We don’t often go to see family movies in a family-friendly timeslot. The trailers before WALL-E were all family movies and although "Bolt" looked interesting, I keep having flashbacks of the trailer for the Chihuahua movie. Imagine huge Aztec musical numbers with thousands of versions of the dog from the Taco Bell commercials and you get the idea. And it also was a Disney movie (WALL-E is Disney/Pixar).
