Okay it’s not like we’ll get any big endorsements or any prize money, but we get the satisfaction of proving to ourselves that we can write 50 000 words in a month.
It was doubtful when I got up this morning whether I would get a chance to work on it today and finish it. Simon’s great plans to give me some undisturbed time kept getting revised. He finished his last night. In the end it all worked out. Granted my story will be a disjointed read with a few million spelling mistakes because I haven’t proofed it or formatted it, but it’s finished. I may never do those things; right now I’m too close to it to be objective enough in my revisions. It’s a relief to be finally finished.
Simon gave me a great idea for next year’s NaNoWriMo. I know, I know. We just finished this one and I’m already on about the next one. I must be crazy. At least I’ll have a year to prepare for it instead of a couple of days.

  1. Yee haw! Finished with two days to spare. My final word count was 50017, sneaking over the line. Yes, I could have written more, but that will come with editing. Besides which, Tammy had a critical advantage: I have it on good authority that her main character’s name was John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt…

"Hi there, John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt," said Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla.

"Hi Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla, how’s it going?" said John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt

    😛

That was a pretty neat experience. I could see how it would be easy to lose. There were a couple of nights that I really didn’t feel like writing my quota of 1,667 words. A few good evenings got me ahead of schedule, and the pressure was off.

I also had a schedule and a plot outline. Sure, the plot changed, but I always had a map to the end. The last 10,000 words mostly played out exactly right, that’s why I ended up with just 17 extra words.

  2. Hey, you know what’s cool? I got an email from Piers Anthony today. Ok, it’s not as cool as that, but over the course of the month we’ve been getting pep talk emails from various published authors. Today is the last day of NaNoWriMo, and the last pep talk of the month was by Piers Anthony. 🙂 Dad should appreciate that one.

  3. Crazy…. Good for you guys. I could never sit down and write that many words. Well I could but, it would all end up sounding like Charlie Brown’s Teacher.
