We’re ready to head for the slopes

On Monday, we got the message that our roof rack “fit kit” had come in for the Volkswagen. So it was a matter of getting down to Racks Unlimited and getting things installed. I finished work early yesterday, headed home, waited for the kids to get home, and then headed out.

The fellow at the shop, Brandon, did some quick measuring, and even though the Golf is not a large car and the ski-type boxes are long, there would be room to install it. So the next step was choosing the wider “XL” or the narrower “Alpine” box. I went with the Alpine box. I figured that maybe at some point in the future when the kids are grown, fitting the whole family’s gear in the box might be a tight fit, but for the next five or more years, it’s my full-size board, Tammy’s smaller board and two junior-size ski sets. We’ll probably save the cost of a new box in gas going with the smaller box and the aero bars.

The box will also transfer to the Mazda, or basically any other roof rack. The new fasteners from Thule are amazing.

So, less than an hour and $1300 later, Tammy’s car is ready for trips to the hill!
