With authority comes responsibility

How ominous…

After trying to improve/fix the situation over many months, I had the dubious honour of firing a teacher this afternoon.

There have been complaints brought against her on and off for months and we managed to solve most of them, but one persisted: the inability to be enthusiastic while teaching. Anyone who has taught knows it’s part showmanship, part knowledge exchange. This teacher is too mild-mannered and non-reactive. In short her classes found her lessons boring and her attitude too unauthoritative. It was so much of an issue that students across the board said if she were their teacher next term they would either try to transfer out or quit. Speculation suggests this may be a reason why our numbers are dropping – word getting back to agents that our teachers are crap and that we don’t do anything about it.

It’s not that she’s a bad teacher, just not the right fit for our school. Now time will tell if she stays until next Friday (her last day) or if she ups and goes immediately. I have people ready to fill in if she decides not to continue until the end.

I hope I don’t have to do this too many more times. Despite what Kevin said to Kyoko (our new interim manager), it’s very distressing to take away a job especially when times are tight.
