Brr. It was nothing like the one last year. The weather around Calgary turned mid-week last week, much to my dismay. Knowing that the weather was likely to be grim today, we picked up a rain jacket and a temporary rear fender.

I put my bike in the car and got ready to ride. I drove out to the starting point, the Bar U Ranch south of Calgary. I’d told Tammy that one of the following things would happen:

  1. I would get there and it was raining hard. I would turn around and come home, or
  2. It would be miserable but manageable, and I would ride to the 30 km turnaround and come back, or
  3. It would be okay and I would ride the full 100 km distance as planned.

I was in luck. Despite the chilly and grey start, it wasn’t actually raining.

It was cold: 4 Celsius. But with many layers on, it was tolerable once I started moving around. Daniel, a guy from the Bow Cyclists, rode with me the whole way.

My bike got dirty, but my bum stayed clean, thanks to the fender!

I’m tired now, but happy that it turned out okay.

  1. How long did it take you? Like your jacket, lucky you thought of the fender 🚴

    1. I finished in 3.5 hours. Averaged 28 km/h, which is energetic, but not trying to bury myself. 😄 I am still in early season shape, so I expect to improve as the summer rolls on.
