Today at Apple: Swift

Tonight, I took Ian and his friend Joey to the Apple Store at Market Mall to take part in Coding Skills: Getting Started with Swift Playgrounds. Apple puts on these free how-to seminars in the stores. I figured Ian would enjoy it and would enjoy it even more with his friend. And I was right.

Me, Ian and Joey

We got there in time for me to run to Purdy’s and pick up some chocolates courtesy of Dad (thank you!) and then we were the only ones signed up for the class. Well, I wasn’t signed up, but I brought my own iPad Pro with Swift Playgrounds installed and the right playground downloaded already.

We had fun, and the boys really did well. The facilitator, John, was impressed and started skipping ahead in the course material when the boys were nailing each exercise.

The 😡 moment was… my iPad wasn’t fast enough and I had to borrow one of the iPad Pros. I was surprised: Swift Playgrounds was running pretty slow and making it hard for me to keep up. When I told Tammy when I got home, she gave me a complete lack of sympathy. All last weekend (Black Friday/Cyber Monday) I’d been dithering about taking advantage of the sales to get a new iPad and in the end I didn’t go for it. Good thing this class was after the weekend, or it might have turned out differently.

An example challenge in Swift Playgrounds.
