Worst Drive to Work

Every Saturday and Sunday, Miranda goes to work at Abby’s. Usually, she would drive there with mum just as a method of sharpening her driving skills. This morning, however, I elected to be the person driving as I still am a GDL 7, and still need to take the driving test. We all got ready and left a little after 10:20. For the most part, the drive was uneventful, and routine. But then, as I was driving through Bowness at 50 kph with Miranda in the back seat and mum in the passenger seat, I saw for a split second, a black blur out the corner of my eye. Less than an eye blink later, THUMP! THUMP! I had run over something. I didn’t stop immediately since I was in shock, but only a few seconds later, I turned back to find out what I ran over. To all of our shock and devastation, I had ran over a cat.

Me and mum jumped out to assess the damage, and to find any possible way to help the severely injured cat. A man had stopped on the side of the road behind our car as well, and got out to see. This man was probably in his 60s, and was super shocked and devastated as much as we were at the situation. He got out a ratted out shopping bag to put the cat in, and recommended us to go to a nearby animal hospital in Varsity. We successfully got the cat inside our car, and thanked the man. Mum later told me that the man was very glad to not have brought his daughter, as she would have been in absolute pieces.

We drove to the clinic and along the way, and dropped Miranda off a few blocks away from work. At this point, we were living in the moment. No future thoughts, now past thoughts. All our minds were focused on that cat’s survival, and we supressed any negative thoughts in order to achieve our goal of getting the cat to medical attention. The cat surprisingly was still conscious, but barely. At first, the cat was in distress and every few moments was screeching in pain. As much as it was absolute torture to hear, it of course meant the cat wasn’t dead, which gave us hope. However, in the last 5 or so minutes driving to the hospital, the cat made zero noise.

We got to the animal hospital, my mum jumped out with the cat, and I waited in the car as mum was rushing the cat in. After a few minutes, mum came out and burst into tears. I got out and gave her a long hug.

This definitely has got to be the worst drive to work… ever.
