Busy Summery Saturday

It was my first day back from Toronto, and a beautiful day in Calgary. So we got a lot done, and had some fun, too.

First off was cleaning up and tidying the house. It’s now the end of “indoor riding” season, and so for the first time since last fall, there are no bicycles in the bonus room. The trainer is put away in the storage room, until the weather cools again. I did a bit of tidying up in the garden as well, and sprayed the weeds in the path/stonework out back. Then Ian and I did a bit of shopping and we had some lunch.

Then we headed out. We hit Games People Play, where we found Ian a new Rubik’s Cube. I know it seems silly, but the new ones work much better than the old one that he was using. Besides, any excuse to visit a games store is a good one. We picked up a Rummoli game and some new playing cards while we were there… Happy Mother’s Day, Tammy!

Then we hit Michaels and the Home Depot. I needed more weed killer, but I also was doing a bit of reconnaissance for a project this spring: I am planning on sanding and re-finishing the deck out back. They have floor sanders for rent there. I tried hand-sanding, and I think renting a floor sander would be well worth it.

After supper, at Ian’s insistence, we went for a family bike ride. But this wasn’t a simple one: oh, no. Ian wanted to ride to downtown. So he and I got on our bikes, and headed (downhill) for the 20 km ride. Tammy and Miranda put their bikes on the car and drove to meet us at Shouldice Park, which is about halfway. We made it all the way, and then everybody rode back to the car. Tammy, Miranda and Ian drove home, and I rode.

It was an 18 km ride for the girls, a 28 km ride for Ian, and a 39 km ride for me.

In the evening, when the kids were in bed, Tammy and I stayed up a little later than usual, watching Shaun of the Dead, with the window open to cool the room down. When the show was over, the lights were out and we were ready to go to bed, when I noticed that there were northern lights shining in the sky. We got the kids up to look (just past midnight… they were thrilled…) and we watched for a while on the deck. Tammy posted it to Facebook, where her friend Kyoko saw it. She then apparently hauled her husband out of bed and drove out of town to see. She took a picture with her iPhone.

She then posted the pictures and wrote:

Jorge said thank you million times even though I woke him up at 1:30am to let him drive to outside of the city to see it

  1. The Northern lights are something i would like to see someday.. Sounds like a fun filled day. I spent the day cleaning house as our cleaner lady has been under the weather. Bought one of those mops advertised on TV with the spinning mop cleaner, works really great.Dad
