Hello from Dunnigan, California

Well we made it this far, but it’s not Sacramento like we hoped for partly due to the fact that we left a little later this morning and we made plenty of stops along the way. Tonight we’re staying at the Best Western. It has 2 queens and a hide-a-bed. Lots of choices for sleeping. We also got a crib for Ian.

Today’s drive had some real eventful moments involving snow! We left Willsonville around 9 and carried on down the I5. Not a lot to see: traffic, trees, dirt…like the trip to PG really. It was when we started up Mt. Siskiyou just outside of Medford. Many of the higher elevation highways had Carry Chains signs, but this one really meant it. Near the summit, at 4300Ft, that it got ugly. A rig got stuck in the icy conditions which held up another rig behind it and all the cars behind that. We, and everyone else, all had to take an exit and make an illegal turn to get back onto the I5. We had a brief moment of spinning the tires and fears that we were stuck too, but it resolved itself.

We had lunch at McD’s and supper at a real mom’n’pop restaurant called the Berry Patch. The weather was on and off rain, snow, and a bit of sun. The mostly cloudy conditions prevented us from seeing Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Shasta. Here’s hoping Southern California is sunnier and warmer.

The kids did quite well today. Ian got a little shirty now and then, but that ended up in filling his shorts. 😀 One of our DVD screens died, but the main unit still works. It’s weird driving with a top box. I’m afraid of taking a curve too quickly in case we tip over. You really feel the wind as you drive. The trip is being a real experience. Ian is the biggest challenge: the warming of bottles in the car with hot water in a cup, plus he’d like to roll around a bit. If we tag along next year it might be a bit better. He’ll be on more regular food and more easily entertained, plus able to move on his own.

  1. Had to go all the way to California to find Snow, hey. Ha, Ha, Ha. Actually I remember driving that with my parents "Grants’ Pass" if I remember correctly. Quite a climb I think we smoked the catalytic converter on that climb in the car we had at the time.

Glad everyone is doing ok. Have fun!
