Palm Springs Trip – Day 1

Hello from Wilsonville, just south of Portland, Oregon! We’ve checked into the local Super 8 motel for our first stop on our trip. Today was a fairly easy day, with lots of variety. We left our house at 7:30 this morning and got to the Coho ferry terminal by 8:30. That started our first wait of the day, but that was punctuated by the arrival of the customs officer just after 9:00 and the ferry arriving around 10:00. The ferry trip itself was nice. It was chilly on deck, but at least it was sunny.

We took a different route from Port Angeles to Portland this time: the previous trips that we have made, we have always gone along the Hood Canal, which is a very slow, forest route. This time we headed further east, across the Hood Canal floating bridge, and through Bremerton and Tacoma. It was a lot faster. With stops to let everyone out of the car and for lunch, and getting caught in Portland’s Friday rush hour, it took six hours to get to the hotel from the time we got off the ferry. Not bad. We’ll keep that in mind for the return trip. We discovered that the last Coho ferry from Port Angeles is at 2:00! Not a lot of time to get there if we want to catch that ferry.

Not much else to report. The kids watched Cars 2 in the back seat, and part of Ratatouille. The weather was mostly clear. We couldn’t see Mt. Ranier, but we saw most of Mt. St. Helens and all of Mt. Hood.

Tomorrow we’re heading for around Sacramento.
