And… It’s Done: Linode Deployed

These things are always more work than you imagine and less than you fear. I think that by hosting on Linux for the first time, it was actually easier than MacOS or Windows. Most of the instructions you find on the internet are tailored to Linux, and I chose a very common distro as well.

I could almost cry seeing this website working on my Bell iPhone when connected to the cellular network. It’s been annoying as heck. When I would buy a C-Train ticket in the morning, I could only add the transaction to the FFF when I was connected to the Shaw Open WiFi at the stations, and not on LTE in between. It made for a bit of a game trying to log into the app and record the transaction before the train left the station. No more.

The only issues today were:

  • DNS switchover took a little while. I set up the DNS information at Linode and cancelled my services at DynDNS, but it took over an hour before the biickert.ca domain was ready.
  • I wanted to just disable my DynDNS, but there was only one option: cancelling. Bummer. I’d just renewed for two years in June. No matter, I wasn’t going to need it. But I wasn’t sure.
  • I tried installing AskBot as the client for LetsEncrypt, but ended up in python dependency hell. Changed tactics and installed CertBot instead.

There is still work to be done, but this is the biggest chunk. If you see anything amiss, with broken links or photos, let me know.

In other news, Murphy had lots of fun this morning. Magpies and squirrels came to visit him.
