Cable Cut

After years of talking about it, we finally did it: our cable is cut. Of course Shaw is still getting a wad of money from us every month, but it’s purely for Internet. We were going through all of our monthly bills and setting up automatic payments for the year, and the cable bill came up. At $118 a month, it’s always one that bugs me. We are big Internet users, but I am the only one in our family who watches any TV at all. I always waffle because I like to watch hockey, CFL and UCI cycling.

But to be honest, not for $43/month, which is the cable & PVR part of our bill. So, we have cut the cable, and bumped up our Internet. That, combined with the upgraded modem we will receive tomorrow should help fix our Vonage telephone issues (hopefully).

  1. So, now we’re upgraded to “Shaw 60”. Rated to 60 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload, but our testing was better than that: 70 down, about 6 up. But the best part is that our phone issues seemed largely resolved when I called Mom and Dad yesterday afternoon. We’ve also simplified our network somewhat: we’re using the Shaw modem as the WiFi hotspot instead of our Apple Time Capsule. The Time Capsule has now been reduced to only a switch connecting the main computer to the network.
