This past week we have been testing Mr. Doos’ blood sugar because his semi-weekly test on Monday gave really low numbers. So far his highest number was from this morning at 14.3.

Dr. Bell, the vet, had been at a conference this past weekend on feline diabetes. New research has found that a high protein diet, cat meat only, has been shown to cure diabetes in cats who are borderline like Doos. So this Saturday we’ll get some vet meat and mix it with Whiskas until we can just give him the vet meat alone. The dry food will be taken up until we see results, if any. If he cures himself, the dry will be reintroduced. We still have to give him insulin, but only 1 unit instead of 1.5.

His kidney function is fine, good enough for the higher protein. There was worry of renal complications with high protein, she seems to think he’s healthy enough to handle it. In 2 weeks we’ll go in for another frutosamine test and see what’s up. If we can get him down a couple of pounds this may do the trick and get rid of the diabetes.

We can only hope this will work.

  1. Maybe he’s doing better because you’re at home now. I am surprised at how well he is doing, and it would be nice to get him down to a single, small injection per day.
