Merry Christmas 2023

Seems like we spend a long time waiting for Christmas to arrive and then suddenly it’s here. This year was complicated by first Ian and then Tammy getting a cold. Ian’s mostly better now, but Tammy slept on the couch last night because of her coughing. And to keep an eye on the cats and the Christmas tree, to some extent. It’s not just an idle worry: here’s what we saw yesterday afternoon when Murphy chased Liz up the tree.

The morning started early. Tammy had an elaborate breakfast planned, with eggs, sausage, fruit and fresh cinnamon buns. Yes, she got up before 6 to get cinnamon buns into the oven. We had our breakfast and then opened stockings. The cats got their churros.

Afterwards, we got dressed and then opened presents. There were a lot of wonderful gifts, including Miranda finding me four French language Tintin books, a pannier rack and bags for Ian, a Japanese garden Lego set for Miranda and a foot massager for Tammy. The cats got a fun “smart ball” toy that they chased around. Miranda made Tammy a neat bracelet, with little Snoopy and Woodstock drawings on every “stone”.

The rest of the day was a mix of FaceTime calls with family, playing with our new things, installing the panniers on Ian’s bike, playing a bit of Minecraft, and preparing for our mid-afternoon dinner. We talked to Colin and Carol first (on Pender Island) and then Dad, and finally Stephanie and family. Brianna also had a cold, so they were steering clear of Dad today. It’s a good thing Dad’s now at the Alexander Mackie, because he got a Christmas ham lunch and a gift bag.

Because Tammy was under the weather, everybody pitched in with preparing our dinner. I guess I took the lead, and the kids helped with preparing the yams, sprouts and stuffing. It all turned out edible, thank goodness. Dessert ended up being a white chocolate raspberry dazzle frost ice cream cake from Abbey’s. That was part of Miranda’s Christmas bonus.

The turkey was nice and moist. Everything was delicious. After supper, Tammy and I went for a walk but turned around when we spotted a moose on the path. Ian’s now off to ride his bike with its panniers down to A&W where his friend Josh is working today. He wants to give the panniers a try (loaded with his normal school stuff) as well as say hi to his friend. Miranda’s working on her Lego at the table as I type this.

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas out there. 🎄
