Miles and Miles of Pixels

I’m not sure what the rationale is for laptop manufacturers to put screens on laptops that have an insanely high native resolution. My first laptop from ESRI Canada had a reasonable 1680×1024 screen on it, but the last one and my new one are 1920×1200. I mean, I appreciate the screen real estate, but day-in, day-out staring at a screen with 1920×1200 pixels packed into a 15″ rectangle is painful. You can scale the pixels to a non-native resolution, but then everything’s blurry.

So rather than develop a hunch and constant eyestrain, I’ve opted for a different plan: a high-resolution 24″ monitor. Same number of pixels as the laptop shows, but spread over 24 inches instead of 15. It’s so much nicer to look at.

  1. I hear yah. I don’t understand why they do that either. I was happy when my New laptop had a slightly lower resolution but, it sure is easier to look at.
    24 Inch is nice!

The part I don’t understand is why everything must go widescreen. In a work environment it makes no sense. I still prefer the square 19" screen to a Widescreen. Of course having 2 19" screens at work is fantastic!
