Today was the day when everybody (except me!) got new iPhones.

A figurative rainbow of phones

For Tammy and Miranda, this was their 3rd iPhone: they each have had a 5s and a 6s. For Ian, this was also his 3rd iPhone (hand-me-down 5s, used 6s) but the first time that he actually has a SIM card and a phone number.

While it seems… gratuitous… that we got three iPhones 11 on the day after they were released, but that actually makes sense. For years, Tammy has been annoying the heck out of me, getting her iPhone right before the new ones were released.

Tammy: “Oh look! They are on sale!”

Me: “Yeah, that’s because they are about to be replaced.”

Tammy: “I don’t care. Gimme.”

So her Rogers contract was up at the beginning of the month, and so I managed to get her to delay the new phone until after the new ones were released. This was also our opportunity to get Ian onto the family plan. He’s now on his own at school since Miranda is off to high school. Until now, we could always count on Miranda being near Ian at school if he needed to get hold of us. He also is starting to go on bike rides by himself so we wanted him to have the ability to call home (and for us to have the ability to find him).

Why the new 11? For Tammy and Ian, it was greatly desired. Miranda liked the colour, but I’m sure if push came to shove she would have been happy with last year’s XR or even an iPhone 8. Tammy wanted to get the latest. She was five generations of iPhone behind with the 6s and she’s likely to have this one for another four years anyways. Ian, on the other hand, was all about the camera. He is constantly creating videos and taking photos and time lapses and he was super-excited about the vastly superior camera. He also might have been happy with an XR, but he really wanted night mode.

It’s not cheap, I’ll grant you. The monthly bill will be higher 💸 but:

  • The shared data pool has gone from 3 GB to 30 GB
  • The cost of the iPhones is broken up over 24 monthly bills, essentially interest-free (I did the math in the store to make sure) instead of having to pay a lump sum
  • Once the 24 months is over we will own the phones outright and our monthly bill will drop by $90

Ian and I went and did a new low-light photos, first taking the shot with my iPhone 8 (the same camera as the wide-angle lens on the iPhone X) and his iPhone 11. I think the results speak for themselves.

And then an obligatory Murphy picture, using Night Mode.

  1. (indignation follows…) I never said “gimme”. I was happy to stay with my 6 until next year. In fact, I was expecting to do so and now I have to return my Jiji iphone case I ordered.
(gratitude follows…) That being said, it’s a really nice phone. I’m sure I’ll enjoy it for the next 3+ years. Thank you.

    1. Hi Carol, the Apple Watches that we have don’t have a cellular connection, so they rely on the phone to connect to the network. Ian’s phone didn’t have a SIM card (i.e. a cellular data connection) so when he wasn’t on WiFi, he was not reachable.
