Today is the day that Greenlight Solar is starting the installation of the panels on the roof. Thankfully, they didn’t start too early, so I got my critical work meeting out off the way long before they arrived. They are here now and laying out the panels on the roof to see how they fit.

Mr. Murphy is in Ian’s room for the next three days, just to guarantee that he won’t get outside because of an errant door left open. I’m likely going to be in the dining room for most of the time, so that I can be available if there are questions.

Day one is complete. I think most of what they accomplished was putting up the rails that the panels will be mounted on.

Mounting rails in place

Tomorrow will be running conduit and the electrical parts of the system, as far as I know.

Updated

It’s day two now, and a lot has happened so far today, and it’s only midday. There now is a conduit on the side of the house that has wire in it that is running into the attic. There is at least one hole in my roof big enough for daylight to come through… Some of the solar panels are mounted. I have been to Memory Express and back to get another length of Cat 6 ethernet and a Wi-Fi access point, because according to Fred (the guy calling the shots) that should be routed in the second conduit today. In fact, he is hoping they will be done today, which would be nice.

And now it’s all over but the fine details. The crew packed up around 4 pm. All of the panels are installed and the wiring is done.

  • Installing the monitor device that lets me see the generation figures,
  • Getting the ENMAX inspection.

Fred will be back either tomorrow or the next day to do the first thing, and ENMAX should be within the week.

Updated yet again

And now the piece de resistance: With ethernet run to the attic, I present: a new Wi-Fi access point conveniently positioned in the hall ceiling right outside the bedroom doors. In one fell swoop, Tammy should have no further network issues when teaching from home. I measured a Tx rate of 592 Mbps on her MacBook Air at her desk, which is more bandwidth than we have to the Internet. I’ve got another ethernet cable routed up there for future considerations, but for the moment, this will do just fine.
