Downstairs Home Theatre

Almost three years ago, I mounted the Panasonic plasma TV on the wall in the basement. It was still only a year into the pandemic and we were still playing ping pong a lot down there. I’d thought about getting a soundbar from time to time, and then when we got some new HomePods, that served pretty well for a TV speaker the few times anybody was watching TV down there.

Then came our illness and I found myself “living” downstairs. I was staring at the unused ping pong table (not even a net up) and the piled up JVC-6032 receiver, speakers and subwoofer down there. I “inherited” the receiver from Mom and Dad when I helped them move out of their house in 2015. It was in our bedroom not really being used for most of that time.

It started simply enough: unhooking the HomePod and putting the receiver and speakers in place. Then it was fishing the speaker wire under the carpet. Then disassembling the ping pong table and putting it back into storage. And finally ordering some speaker stands so that they wouldn’t just be resting on the floor.

The stands arrived this evening and Ian helped me put them together. Tammy didn’t know that I was rearranging the basement and was pretty surprised when she came down.

You know, it might be a 14 year old receiver without any HD video capabilities (let alone HDMI), but if all you need it to do is play sound, it works just great.

The cats just love it when I move stuff around. It’s like a whole new world for them and they explore for hours.
