The End of a Long Process

The cheque is in the mail.

At that point, I suppose the process was over, but until the cheque arrived and deposited back into savings I didn’t really feel like it was over. The cheque arrived in the mail today and it was the closure to a process that took a heck of a long time.

It started in July 2021 with a quote from Greenlight Solar. At that time, it became clear that the process would be cheap enough that we could afford it, especially with the Greener Homes Grant. We signed up and got approved, and then we waited. And waited. The GHG website indicated that the company we had selected to do an energy evaluation of our house would get in touch. Eventually (months later) I got impatient and reached out to them, to find out that they were so busy with the program that they weren’t really going to the government site to look for jobs to do. The only way to get them to do it was to call them and get in the queue. 😣

So I got in the queue and it was another five months before the evaluator came. Once that part was done, I got in touch again with Greenlight Solar, to find that the solar panels and other equipment were back ordered due to the pandemic. The panels arrived mid-September 2022 but the micro inverters were not available yet. It took until mid-October for that. Then installation happened just as the weather turned. It’s hard to tell if the system is working when there’s a blanket of snow on the roof. But the weather cleared again, and everything was tested and working.

Then we had to wait for the energy evaluators to come again. The whole idea behind the GHG is that your house has efficiency X, and the grant will help the house get to efficiency X+Y. Nothing else had really changed about our house (I’d put in some of the recommended insulating gaskets on the electrical boxes on external walls) so the report was just: “House with efficiency X now can generate up to 5.5 kW of energy.” Then we waited for months for the report to be available. Then it was up to 40 business days for the GHG people to read it. Then it was up to 50 business days for the cheque to arrive.

Let’s just say I’m significantly older now than when this whole thing started.

But it’s done now.
